Flexible Gear Couplings

A Gear coupling is a mechanical device basically used to connect two shafts where some non-collinear torque is experienced. The gear coupling and the grid coupling are the most common types of coupling. Flexible Gear Couplings are used for both in medium and large scale industries say for 100 hp, where the usual grid couplings applications used are under 1000 hp. Coupling is also carried out for connecting two different machines of different specifications.

Here the most important type is Flexible Gear Coupling. It consists of a forged sleeve which has tooth cuts on the internal surface. The forged sleeves are usually made up of two halves possessing internal gears in both the pieces. There are some circumstances where high tensile strength is expected, and hence the forged sleeve remains a single piece in this situation. The torque of the rotating object is enhanced and the power lost is negligible, with this method of coupling compared to other methods.

Based on the applications, it is classified as commercial type and small range type. The commercial type has the capacity to transmit huge torque since their physical size is bigger when compared to small range. The commercial coupling is employed in places where high torque and low inertia combinations are required. Extra care has to be taken while designing the teeth because excessive pressure on running a device with more misalignment can cause the machine to cease working. The small range type is not so complicated in design and rigid enough to handle some pressure on running hours.

Alignment plays a major role in coupling. If the alignment is initially done with much care, then there should be enough room left in the coupling concept for it to handle increased misalignment during operation. The growing technology enables to find more advancements in the Flexible gear couplings to produce its products at affordable rates, these days.
