Tips To Extend the Life of Your Gear Couplings

As a user of gear couplings, you are perhaps aware of how much they work for you. Gear couplings can give you more power in comparison to all other classes of couplings. Even if you mishandle your couplings, they continue to give a high-level performance. The only thing that should bother you is their maintenance.

The life of Gear couplings is cut short due to the wear and tear of their teeth. Fortunately, this wear and tear happen slowly rather than abruptly. If you are serious enough to make the life of your couplings a little longer, consider their periodic maintenance. This article gives you a primer about the maintenance aspect of your gear couplings.

There are two types of Gear couplings - low speed (or low-performance couplings) and high speed (or high-performance couplings). For the sake of avoiding undue complexity, let's discuss the maintenance aspect of the standard, low-speed gear couplings only. Lubrication is the keyword to remember when you think of maintaining your couplings.

The forces between the mating teeth and the oscillatory motion of gear couplings tend to wipe out lubricants from the surface area. Lubricants work on the uncovered area when the tooth slides onto the other side. To do its work, the lubricant should have sufficiently high viscosity and should be able to utilize the time available between the two cycles.

When you think about lubricants, two things come up to your mind - oil and grease. Greases are in fact nothing but oil to which some thickening agent is added. Greases are advantageous to oils because they are easier to seal and they remain where lubrication is required.

Apart from the high-speed and low-speed couplings, gear couplings can also be classified on the basis of seal type. One of the types is the all-metal seal (or Fast type) and the other is the elastomer seal type. Oil cannot be used for elastomer seal couplings because of their inability to retain enough lubricants under static conditions. You can use either oil or greases for the all-metal seal couplings. Use grease instead of oil if grease is available. If you are not able to find good grease, then only use oil of high viscosity.

Manufacturers of gear couplings also recommend grease as their preferred lubricant. You can differentiate good quality grease from others based on some properties. A good quality grease should have at least 92% oil, the rest being soap. If the percentage of soap is more, chances are that the teeth' surface will get less lubrication. A good quality grease should also have a highly viscous base oil. Again, the grease should be able to resist centrifugal separation. Very few companies are able to set benchmarks for the last characteristic. The grease of your choice should yield as little oil as possible and that too as slowly as possible. Some good-quality greases are also given special additives like EP additives to extend their longevity.
